How Much Sand Does Your Step 2 Red Crabbie Sandbox Need?
Posted by Jerry Bergosh on
We all remember playing with Legos, a wagon, and summers in a sandbox. The step 2 Crabbie Sandbox is an iconic childhood toy. Despite its familiarity, many ask how much sand is needed for their Red Crabbie sandbox to be fully enjoyed. This is a common question we at Jurassic PlaySands get asked. We know it can be confusing hearing about the manufacturer's recommended amount (300 pounds) as opposed to the max capacity. In order to be enjoyed for years and generations to come, we've compiled recommended amounts of sand as your child grows:
- Children between the ages of 1-2 require 75 pounds, approximately a 1 inch layer of sand.
- Children 3 years of age require 150 pounds, approximately a 2 inch layer of sand.
- Children ages 4 and up require 225 pounds, approximately a 3 inch layer of sand.

The reason younger children need less sand is that lots of sand gets shoveled out. We all know little ones love to dig and explore, but this results in sand outside your sandbox, so we encourage you to test with a small layer first before adding more. You may also want to consider purchasing extra sand so you can replace any spilled sand or add more as your children and grandchildren grow.
This is what each level of sand looks like in a Step 2 Red Crabbie Sandbox.
